The National Organization for Marriage ( or "NOM", funnily enough. nomnomnom) is causing general public outcry in the LGBT community for their blatant outrage at....wait for it....equal rights for lesbians, gays, trans-gendered and bisexual individuals.
Ridiculous much?
I creeped the NOM site to find out exactly what they had to say, just as I've been keeping an eye on what's being posted on FCKH8's Facebook page. What can I say, I like to know what all parties are saying about particular issues. And I was more shocked by the entirety of NOM's website than I was by FCKH8's f-bomb laden three-minute video. And so I provide you with excerpts from the site of the National Organization for Marriage. Enjoy. Or not.
4. What’s the harm from SSM? “How can Adam and Steve hurt your marriage?”
What the fuck? Seriously? Using "that is just not right" to justify a blatantly unfair statement is the equivalent of using "because I said so". So in response, WHY is it just not right? It's a circular argument. You lose no rights by allowing a same-sex couple to become married. Is anyone PERSONALLY taking away your right to marry if your lesbian neighbors decide to get married? Is anyone PERSONALLY coming up to you and saying that heterosexual marriage unions are no longer valid? These people are human beings as well and who are you to decide who can and cannot be married? You're not the Queen of Sheba. You do not have that right.A: “Who gets harmed? The people of this state who lose our right to define marriage as the union of husband and wife, that’s who. That is just not right.”A: “If courts rule that same-sex marriage is a civil right, then, people like you and me who believe children need moms and dads will be treated like bigots and racists.”
“Religious groups like Catholic Charities or the Salvation Army may lose their tax exemptions, or be denied the use of parks and other public facilities, unless they endorse gay marriage."
“Public schools will teach young children that two men being intimate are just the same as a husband and wife, even when it comes to raising kids.”
“When the idea that children need moms and dads get legally stigmatized as bigotry, the job of parents and faith communities trying to transmit a marriage culture to their kids is going to get a lot harder.”
“One thing is for sure: The people of this state will lose our right to keep marriage as the union of a husband and wife. That’s not right.”
Note the emphasis on my words here, it is not mothers and fathers that we need to worry about for children, it is loving parents. Gender-nonspecific loving parents. Two moms, two dads, a mother and a father, what have you. Why does gender even need to be an issue here? Allowing same-sex marriage doesn't mean that all kids will grow up to be "sexually confused" (to use their wording), it means that it will open up doors for kids to be more understanding about gender differences and similarities. If they find out that they're attracted to somebody of the same sex as themselves then let that be their decision and theirs alone.
I have a mother and a father, I have numerous gay/straight/bisexual/transgendered friends, and I am straight. My parents raised me to be tolerant and accepting of all people regardless of their sexual orientation and it didn't harm me in any way. Not all heterosexuals are bigots, and homosexual people don't necessarily choose to be that way- despite popular areas of thinking. Sexual orientation is something you just realize about yourself. And face it, homosexuality is an old, old, OLD practice, for lack of better words. Anybody familiar with the practice of pederasty in ancient Greece and Rome?
They even go so far as to define same-sex unions as "radical social experiments" and that there is an "ideal" family which ought to be attained for the sake of children.
Thoughts, anyone?
I think that your wording of "realize" is the best version of explaining sexuality.
ReplyDeleteI know some people that (like me) knew all along that they were gay. I have been attracted to other women my whole life. I tried to hide it, tried to be "normal" and that, to me, felt "wrong." So, I "came out" I told the world something that, actually, should not have to be "told" to the world. But we love to put things into boxes.
I also have friends that saw past the gender of a person and fell in love with their soul. Or "realized" what was missing in their life. This goes both ways, people I think can go from straight to gay or gay to straight, but I think it is on a person by person basis. There is no "cure." You either love someone and use what ever equipment they have or not.
There are also people who love more than one person at a time. Whether it be a man or a woman. Polyamory, not to be confused with Polygamists, they are those that choose more than one partner. So, what about them? I'm not one, but that doesn't mean I am not open to their ability to share love.
These NOM people, scare me in the fact that they are twofaced. They tell themselves that they should be like Jesus, and love everyone, but then turn around and cast the first stone. All we are doing it fighting back. Eye for and eye. They are as hypocritical as the Bible itself. In which the Almighty says, "I am a jealous God." Let's face it, if the Bible is "mostly" true, that means we were crafted after a seemingly angsty teen, who couldn't play nice with the other Gods. So said, "Let there be no other Gods before me." To be honest, Jesus probably died because he was doing TOO good a job, people then thought, HE was God. Which, technically isn't true. I was raised Jewish, so, they are basing an entire religion on hearsay. The Trinity is a load of bs. Worshiping Mary and then treating women like shit for years and saying that we are unclean is hypocrisy.
So, basically, everything they base their lives on is as silly as the L. Ron Hubbard camp thinking a fucking volcano started it all. Of course, if common sense were all that common a LOT more people would have it.
I like how you said "realized." It is so much better than "chose."
ReplyDeleteI had a rant earlier, but it wouldn't let me post it. Basically, they have very twisted logic, they use a book that is as hypocritical as all of them combined. It is amazing that ignorance and fear does to people. When they face the unknown and decide to automatically hate it, horrible things arise.
On the topic of Greece and Rome, that is what these people fear, the ancients practices, and the pagan Gods. It is sad really.
